The decision to quit smoking is a big one but many people who decide to quit smoking do not know what to do while they are trying to quit. The withdrawal period is the hardest period of abstinence and depending on the amount you smoke the withdrawal period for you will last for 3 to 7 days. This blog will elaborate on some of the things you should do while you quit smoking.

While you quit smoking you should learn coping strategies. These strategies will help you reduce the effect of withdrawal so that you can continue on your path of abstinence. Some of the effective coping strategies for tobacco withdrawal include deep breathing, controlled breathing, meditation and distraction.

Deep breathing involves taking in deep breaths and then releasing the breath after a few seconds. Deep breathing ensures that your brain and body get enough oxygen which will help you overcome anxiety attacks while quitting.

Controlled breathing involves deep breathing along with controlling the amount of oxygen you inhale and exhale. While practicing controlled breathing you should try to take in high levels of oxygen but you should also exhale high levels of carbon dioxide. The best way to do this is to inhale for 3 – 4 seconds and then exhale well.

Distraction is a technique in which the smoker who is trying to stop smoking distracts himself when he feels the need to smoke. While practicing this strategy you should perform a different activity for 10 minutes every time you feel like smoking.
